Content is Key to Successful "Organic" Search Marketing

There are many effective ways to help your web site rank higher on search engines. This discipline is sometimes known as "natural search" or "organic search" marketing. Although there are dozens of techniques for search engine optimization (SEO), they all boil down to one thing: giving search engines what they need in order to present relevant results to search engines. Google said it best when they urged webmasters to simply "Make pages for users, not for search engines."

Here is a brief excerpt from a guide that Nelson Schmidt shares with its clients for SEO Best Practices:

Writing Content

Strive for a high keyword and link density. To improve your chances of ranking high for important search phrases, use keyword-rich copy — with many hypertext links — on appropriate web pages. Links should include your most important keywords for that page. Follow these other guidelines as a rule of thumb:

  • Include keywords in page headers, sub-headlines and page titles
  • Use each keyword approximately 3-5 times per page

Formatting Content

Look through the "eyes" of a search engine "spider" as you format site content. Spiders are web "scanners" sent by search engines to catalog page content. These internet agents scan a web page from top to bottom. Therefore, the most important page content - keywords - should be positioned closer to the top of a page's HTML code.

Ensuring Content Is Unique

Avoid repeating copy across pages. Search engines seek out unique content and tend to ignore content that is repeated. If a search engine discovers duplicate content, you may even find that your site is penalized in search results. If you must use duplicate text information on your site, be sure to include NOFOLLOW, NOINDEX in the Meta tag area, to discourage spiders from cataloging that duplicate content.
